Taking remote control as its main sharing method, the center virtually broadened the accessibility of quality instruments, breaking the shackles of time and space and improving the efficiency of application. Besides, it reduces the cost, achieves a win-win situation for both owners of the equipment and scientific researchers and ignites the reform of research methods in the use of instruments by supporting real-time collaborative operation for multiple scientists at different places, recording the whole process of the experiment and saving valuable original data.“The public remote sharing system of large instruments for micro-beam analysis” has set up a virtual lab equipped with 21 instruments including three SHRIMP, one S-3000 and one S-3400N scanning electron microscope, one MAT900, two LTQ, two NEPTUNE, one EPMA-1600 and one JXA-8200 electron probe, one Finnigan Triton TI, one Finnigan MAT252, one ESI-TOF, and one 2D-mHPLC/TOF-MS, which enables researchers to remotely control these micro-beam instruments and conduct experiments and collaborative research on such subjects as earth science, material science, life science, medicine, and nanotechnology, leading to the establishment of a research and sharing platform. Since 2006, the platform has put the SHRIMP II technology into use, setting up SROS remote work stations respectively in Yichang city of Hubei, University of São Paulo, Ontario Geological Survey, Nanjing University, University of Milano-Bicocca and Institute of Earth Sciences of Academia Sinica, establishing a SROS remote server system in Curtin University of Technology and ASI Company of Australia( in order to share SHRIMP II there already purchased in 2005), and signing cooperation agreement on remote sharing with the isotope lab of University of São Paulo, University of Milano-Bicocca, Ontario Geological Survey and Curtin University of Technology. All the SHRIMP remote work stations and server systems have entered into normal operation, which have assisted worldwide scientists in testing ages of zircons remotely and created tangible social and economic benefits.
